Twins Splurge $3.15M On Dominican 16-Year-Old

Oct 31, 2014 6:12 AM

The Twins have agreed to terms with 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano, his agent said Tuesday, and will pay the highly touted hitter a $3.15 million signing bonus. Rob Plummer said he expects the deal to be finalized this week, likely today. The issue most likely holding up the finalization is one that has been nagging Sano and Plummer all summer while teams have pursued him. Sano is reportedly 16 years old, but questions about his age have been serious enough for Major League Baseball to look into it. MLB did an identity and age investigation this summer, and though his identity checked out, according to reports, the league wasn't able to make a conclusion on Sano's age. The Twins were one of several teams interested in Sano, along with the Pirates and Orioles, and Plummer said Sano is "super, super excited" to sign with Minnesota.

Cubs Won't Re-Sign Harden

Jun 14, 2014 7:22 AM

Rich Harden wants to return to the Cubs next season, but the feeling doesn't appear to be mutual. "We'll see what happens," Harden told the Chicago Tribune. "Hopefully we'll sit down with Jim (Hendry) and talk about that. It's a good city, good fans, good team ... I feel like what we did this year obviously was a little disappointing. It would be good to come back next year and make a run for it." However, manager Lou Piniella hinted on Sunday that the team doesn't have any interest in re-signing the right-hander. "You look at our starting pitching here for next year," Piniella said. "You've got (Carlos) Zambrano, you've got (Ryan) Dempster, you've got (Randy) Wells, you've got (Ted) Lilly, you've got (Tom) Gorzelanny, and you've got (Jeff) Samardzija, who is going to go to winter ball. And if this kid keeps improving, he'll be right in the mix. So we've got six nice arms."

Matsui Isn't Thinking About Free Agency

Aug 6, 2014 7:42 PM

Yankees slugger Hideki Matsui will be a free agent this winter, but isn't thinking about his options yet. "Right now, I'm not even entertaining those thoughts," he told MLB.com. "Until the season's over, then that's probably when I would start evaluating my options." Matsui, who came to the Yankees from Japan in 2003, is just three home runs shy of his career mark, 31, set in 2004. He has been hitting very well as of late. "To be honest with you, I can't really quite explain it," Matsui said. "If you look at the numbers, it seems like the power numbers are there. From a mechanics and approach standpoint, I haven't changed much. Obviously, adjustments are being made every day, so perhaps in that aspect, it's good adjustments."

Beltran Wants Extension From Mets

Sep 27, 2014 8:51 AM

Carlos Beltran's contract runs through the 2011 season, but the center fielder has made it known that he wants to finish his career with the Mets. Beltran believes that he can play at least six more years. He told the New York Post on Saturday night that he won't approach general manager Omar Minaya about an extension, but that he will "let my agent deal with that." Scott Boras represents Beltran, who has a full no-trade clause in his contract. "I love it [in New York]," said Beltran. "I love the guys. I've made New York my home, and I feel happy. Even though we've gone through a lot of terrible things, I still feel like we have the potential to accomplish our goal of winning a World Series."

Infielder Freddy Sanchez is open to returning to the Giants in 2010 if the situation works for both parties. Holliday, Cardinals Aren't Talking Extension

Oct 15, 2014 11:50 PM

The Cardinals and Matt Holliday don't plan to discuss a possible contract extension until after the postseason. There isn't currently any dialogue between the two parties, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Holliday is represented by agent Scott Boras, who has undoubtedly seen his client's market increase since the Athletics dealt him to the Cardinals in late July. "I won't put any restrictions on the Cardinals just as I wouldn't expect them to put any restrictions on Matt," Boras said. "It's a quality place to play, a good city. There are a lot of things that players look at when they determine what they'll do with free agency. You do an effective job of information-taking, evaluate and go from there."

Haren Wants To See Webb Back In Arizona

Oct 11, 2014 12:54 PM

Diamondbacks pitcher Dan Haren wants to see teammate Brandon Webb back in Arizona next season. "I would love to see him back," Haren told the Arizona Republic. "He's more disappointed about this year than anybody, and financially, it's not that much of a risk. With the possibility of losing Doug (Davis) and having already lost (Jon) Garland, we almost need him to come back. If Brandon can be 80 percent of what he was before, he is still a Cy Young contender." The Diamondbacks must pick up Webb's $8.5 million option or buy out his contract for $2 million. The decision must come five days after the conclusion of the World Series.
